Frequently Asked Questions

Looking for more information about Atelier 4? Find the answers to frequently asked questions, below.

General

  • A fine art logistics company specializes in the safe packing, transportation, storage, and installation of valuable artworks and collectibles. Atelier 4 provides these services for museums, galleries, artists, and private collectors.

  • Atelier 4 operates facilities in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Charlotte, with coast-to-coast coverage and international service through global partners.

  • Temperature and humidity control are critical because fluctuations can cause permanent damage to artwork. Excess moisture can lead to mold, warping, or paint flaking, while dry conditions can cause cracking or brittleness. Maintaining a stable environment protects the integrity and longevity of sensitive materials like canvas, wood, paper, and textiles.

  • Yes. We can arrange full-risk, wall-to-wall insurance coverage during transit. This protects against loss or damage, and coverage can be extended to include handling, storage, and installation if needed. We’ll work with you to determine the right level of protection for each shipment.

Storage

  • We have state-of-the-art facilities in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Charlotte, each designed specifically for fine art storage.

  • Our facilities feature multi-layered security systems including 24/7 video surveillance, UL-certified alarms, TSA ID checks, and no unescorted access to shared storage spaces. All Atelier 4 employees must also pass an STA background check prior to employment.

Atelier 4’s systems have been sanctioned by insurance underwriters.

  • Most fine art benefits from climate-controlled storage to prevent damage from fluctuations in temperature and humidity. All of our facilities offer climate-controlled storage, which maintain a consistent temperature of 68°F (20°C) and 55% relative humidity to protect sensitive artworks.  Several of our locations offer non-climate-controlled storage for hardier property types.  Our team can help assess your specific needs and recommend the appropriate storage type.

Packing & Crating

  • We use only archival, museum-quality materials to ensure the safest possible handling of your artwork. Depending on the medium, we may use acid-free tissue, glassine, Tyvek, polyethylene foam, bubble wrap, corner protectors, and custom supports. You choose the standard of fabrication—from affordable commercial to durable multi-use to luxury museum models—and our carpentry nerds will use sustainable materials (where possible) and proven design techniques that will keep your artwork safe.

  • Yes. All Atelier 4 crates are custom-built in-house and engineered to comply with ATA (Air Transport Association) and IATA (International Air Transport Association) guidelines. We use USDA APHIS-compliant wood, which is pre-screened to avoid delays at international customs.

What makes A4 different from the others?

  • No—none of our facilities are in active flood plains. When searching for our various properties, we purposely eliminated from the search any that were at high risk of flooding.

  • Other than the required DOT, minimalist identification information on our trucks, we purposely do not apply large branding and logos to our trucks or our warehouses.  Given the value of the property within our custody, we actually think it’s foolish—if not also irresponsible—to advertise what’s in our trucks and facilities.

  • We are not a large, corporately owned or funded company.  After 36 years, we remain privately owned by our Founder, and we focus our marketing budget on free media coverage or low-cost advertising strategies.  Most of our new business is referred to us by long-time, satisfied clients.

  • We rarely outsource our labor or work with 1099 contractors, and we employ very few part-time workers. To the contrary, we provide competitive wages, excellent benefits, and strive to sustain a company culture that engenders employee loyalty and longevity.  Our company’s senior leadership speaks daily with our handlers, truck drivers, crate techs and project managers—in the event of a service issue, senior leadership—even our Founder—will be involved in ensuring that the client is satisfied with the services we provide.
