S.A.F.E. — Storing Art for Emergencies

Charlotte's inland position and elevation make it the right base for A4's S.A.F.E. program (Storing Art for Emergencies), which is the only program of its kind in the Southeast. S.A.F.E. is a proactive pre-storm art relocation service for collectors and galleries in hurricane-exposed markets: coastal Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, and the Gulf Coast. The premise is simple. Moving art after a storm warning is issued means moving it in evacuation traffic. Moving it before — on a pre-arranged schedule, with enrolled clients who have committed storage and transport — means the work is already inland by the time evacuation orders go out. Charlotte sits approximately 250 miles inland from Charleston and Myrtle Beach, 400 miles from Miami, and well above the storm surge and sustained wind zones that affect coastal markets during a major hurricane. The S.A.F.E. facility stays climate-stable and operational during events that knock out power and HVAC to coastal storage facilities for days. How enrollment works. S.A.F.E. is a pre-season program. Clients enroll before June 1 each year and establish terms for emergency storage and transport in advance. When a storm is tracking toward the coast, enrolled clients are contacted for activation — before the storm is close enough to trigger evacuations. There is no last-minute call to make; the plan is already in place. What S.A.F.E. covers. Emergency transport from origin to Charlotte, secure climate-controlled storage for the duration of the event, condition reporting on arrival and release, and return transport after the all-clear. The program handles the logistics so clients are not making operational decisions during an emergency. If you have a collection in coastal Florida, South Carolina, or anywhere in the Southeast hurricane corridor, ask about S.A.F.E. enrollment before the season starts. The window to enroll for the 2026 season is open now.
